how can you not be sad?

How do you not be sad?

A sigh prolonged within its wall,
But for the darkness, rivers fall.
Tremors in the lower base,
Divots formed upon my face.
Facing days with lone remorse,
Friends to no one on its course.

How can you not be mad?

Eyes raw and red, the hardest years,
Brought about by heavy tears,
Musky works of sweat and shame,
Designed to feel despite the pain.
Relief in prayer, but then again,
It’s not found oft by angry men.

How can you not see God?

Lashes matted to the brow,
Face disfigured, swollen crown.
His eyes knew judgment inside out,
But deferred it to the well-devout.
Gospel truth, but shame despised,
The blood He spilled for you and I.

How can you not repent?

Vision fails in works’ lament,
Faith overcomes with no dissent,
In the darkness, cry His name,
God’s love is light in sweet refrain.
Locust-eaten years are whole,
Let God arise within my soul.
