To Ask in In Jesus’ Name

SSo many times as people of faith, we are encouraged to pray “in Jesus’ name.”  What is the reasoning behind this?  Is it merely a phrase we repeat to ask for God’s favor?  Is it how we show we’re on God’s side?  Please consider the scriptures below.

The scriptures teach that Jesus is here when two or three people are gathered in Jesus’ name.

Matthew 18:19-20
“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (NKJV)

The scriptures teach that anything we ask in Jesus’ name, Jesus will do it.

John 14:12-14
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.  And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.  (NKJV)

This passage speaks of the fact that Jesus is praying for us.

Romans 8:34
“It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” (NKJV)
Something to Think About
The previous passage says, “If you ask anything in My name (Jesus’ name), I will do it.”  How do we ask in Jesus’ name? First of all, we do this by praying with two or three people.  We know from the third passage that Jesus makes intercession.  When Jesus is gathered with us and praying, we can know that we pray according to the will of God, and He is there praying with us.  We know that the Holy Spirit guides us into all truth and His Spirit bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of God.  By this we know not to ask amiss, to fulfill our lusts.  To pray in the will of God with two or three people, this is synonymous with praying in Jesus’ name.

More than mere words?

John 7:24
Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment. (NKJV)

I think also that if we are abiding in Christ, we abide in His name and his will. For me, this is a goal and I labor to enter into that rest.
