MMy voice can get lost underneath the weight of the world. The rigamarole that life affords begs for silence, even stillness if we are able to express the intentions of our struggles with God. How we hear God respond denies the assets that this world affords and all the noise that goes along with it. Expressly intend to listen and speak to our Creator in the same way you would a friend. Although initially you will find yourself being hesitant when you make decisions in life, taking a step back from the world is a sign that we discriminate against injustice and are open to the L
ORD’s wisdom. Communication within our hearts through the Holy Spirit and the communion of God and man is often referenced in the word of God as prayer, and where there is favor, there is the still small voice of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: God-who-hears.
Would bagels and cream cheese be good? I looked hesitantly upon the items in the makeshift pantry that was also home to our Tupperware.
“There are some perfectly good English muffins there too,” God suggested.
The sourdough English muffins were modest in their regality. I bought them quite a while ago and hadn’t really eaten them. They seemed good in the store. It’s a consideration. “Okay God, you’re on!”
God laughed.
“I know! Like Elijah and the still small voice.”
1 Kings 19:11-12 And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice, but the LORD was not in the still small voice; and after the still small voice, an english muffin. (New Gary Version)
I consulted the passage with some common sense shortly thereafter. God does have a sense of humor.
“Wait,” God interrupted, as if astonished. “Go back.”
1 Kings 19:11-12 And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (NON-ADJUSTED, REAL VERSION)
“Yes God, like Elijah with the still small voice.”
“Why did you pick that?” He was smiling; I could tell.
“I like this passage. You chose to reveal yourself in a way that was soft and gentle. I guess I think it’s pretty special to be a part of that; more intimate than a flame of fire, more gentle than gales of wind, and more earth-shattering than a simple earthquake. Those things always capture men’s imagination, but only You chose this.”
“What’s more important to know, is I chose you,” God said with a wink.
There is, within every heart, a place reserved for the voice of God. He’s the one who guides us, the one who laughs at our little jokes, and the one who marvels because of who we are. If He laughs, He thought it was funny. Since God cannot lie and that means my jokes are funny too. And when He guides, He loves our obedience. Yes, it was English muffins for me, but it’s even better when it’s something intimate between Him and you. I had a very delicious afternoon snack; I think that’s a given. Can I appreciate that any less considering the company I keep? And one last scripture that always goes with English muffins and peanut butter:
1 Pet 2:2b-3 “…desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the LORD is gracious.” (NKJV)
