Looks like I’m having frozen delights for dinner! Ice cream? No, chicken nuggets. I don’t know why. Perhaps it was the unrelenting boredom or my impenitent hunger pangs. I definitely did not take the fact that my wife and I were going to share a meal together, one that was homemade and lovingly prepared by her and her Mom. So, I ate chicken nuggets and was full when she came home later.
She said she didn’t mind; she didn’t need to eat; she didn’t mind waiting until I was hungry again… I wonder how often God says this to me?
Like chicken nuggets, I snack on my spiritual food for the day… it allays the hunger. I wear a Christian t-shirt. I listen to a Christian radio station. I say a quick prayer before I eat. My Christianity is conveniently packaged and certainly relevant to my need for Christ, although it certainly doesn’t compare to the warm intimate meals I share with God by the hearthstone. God says, “Come, dine with me.” Enjoy moments with Him, for they are precious, holy, and pleasant indeed.
Oh no. Hold on, God. You mean when I show up to dine with you, I can’t just sit by the door and duck out early? Whoops. Also God, are you saying that if I do show up and show a genuine interest, You might not have anything to say to me right off the bat? You’re saying that you want us to diligently seek You.

On health shows, the one thing they always say is, drink water. Water, they say, is so good for you! It facilitates healthy organs, controls calories, energizes muscles. and you can never get too much. Your life-giving activity of choice is like water. There will never be a time when you overindulge in this activity with God… it will always be helpful. So, go ahead and take that extra prayer-muffin! Enjoy that extra slab of scripture-steak! Pop the praise-popcorn, and catch a Christian Movie! Your meal with God will always be guilt free, calorie free, and beneficial to your Spirit. If you can’t figure out what you want to do for an evening, strongly consider your “go-to” activity. What is going to be healthier for our spirit and more regenerative to our soul than water?
Let’s say I have two ways to spend my time. I kind of want to watch a movie or I kind of want to read my Bible, and I can’t decide which I want to do right now. This is my defining moment! The Spirit longs to choose what is holy, and on first glance, you might think you know exactly what that is; the Bible reading right? Think very carefully about it. It’s holy to pursue any activity, at any point in time, when I will feel the following way:
- There is no resentment. (1 Cor 16:14 NKJV)
- There is grace. (Rom 6:14 NKJV)
- We experience a sense of freedom, knowing that the decision is blessed.
(Eph 3:12 NKJV, 1 Cor 6:12 NKJV, Rom 8:28 NKJV)
May the LORD dine with us always, for he has prepared a true meal indeed.
